Modi and Pezeshkian Strengthen Historic Iran-India Relations

Date:

In a recent meeting held during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the deep-rooted and historical ties between their two nations. Describing the relationship as “long-standing” and “historic,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei emphasized Tehran’s significant interest in fostering economic and trade collaborations with New Delhi.

The discussion between the two leaders covered various topics, notably the development of the Chabahar Port, a pivotal project symbolizing the cooperation between India and Iran. This strategic port continues to play a crucial role in their bilateral engagements, enhancing trade routes and regional connectivity. Additionally, Modi and Pezeshkian exchanged insights on regional developments and deliberated on initiatives aimed at promoting lasting peace in the area.

India expressed its unwavering dedication to bolstering its partnership with Iran, highlighting a commitment to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors. The dialogue also extended to the current regional situation and the collaborative diplomatic efforts required to establish peace and stability.

The meeting has not gone unnoticed by international observers, particularly the United States. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged the sovereign right of countries to pursue independent foreign policies. However, he underscored the importance of not aiding Iran in circumventing U.S. sanctions, a point of contention that continues to influence international diplomatic relations.
