Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a series of rallies to be organized by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) across Assam from October 13 to October 31. The rallies aim to counter what the BJP perceives as Congress’s attempts to undermine democratic institutions. Sarma made the announcement during a press briefing in Guwahati, emphasizing the rallies’ focus on supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and bolstering public confidence in constitutional institutions.
Sarma accused the Congress and other opposition parties of politically challenging institutions like the Election Commission and the Supreme Court. He criticized the Congress’s opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, arguing that the process is crucial for addressing concerns related to voter lists and illegal immigration in Assam.
The Assam Chief Minister also targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of having inconsistent standards regarding election results, depending on the winning party. Sarma further criticized Gandhi’s actions towards the Supreme Court, arguing that constitutional institutions should remain free from political pressure.
The BJP’s planned rallies will focus on supporting democratic institutions and opposing the Congress party’s approach to electoral and constitutional matters. This announcement comes amid ongoing political tensions between the BJP and Congress, particularly concerning electoral processes, institutional independence, and immigration-related issues in Assam.
