India Reduces Travel Time with Major Infrastructure Expansion

Date:

India’s ambitious infrastructure expansion is dramatically reducing travel times across the country, as new expressways, rail services, and tunnels enhance connectivity, according to a government factsheet. The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, a key component of this initiative, is set to decrease travel time between the two cities from 33 hours to just 12 hours.

Other expressways are also contributing to faster travel. The Delhi-Meerut Expressway now allows commuters to complete their journey in about 50 minutes, down from 2.5 hours. Similarly, the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway has reduced travel time from nearly three hours to approximately 75 minutes. The Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor and the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Mahamarg have also seen significant reductions in travel times, offering quicker routes for commuters and travelers alike.

Additionally, new bridges and tunnels are bolstering regional connectivity. The Bhupen Hazarika Setu has reduced travel time between parts of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh from six hours to one hour, while the Bogibeel Bridge enhances connectivity between Dhemaji and Dibrugarh. In Bihar, the Kosi Rail Mahasetu has slashed rail travel time between Nirmali and Saraigarh from eight hours to just 30 minutes.

Modern rail services, including the introduction of Vande Bharat trains, are further improving travel efficiency. These trains have notably reduced journey times on major routes such as New Delhi to Varanasi and Katra to Srinagar, significantly cutting down travel durations. The railway timetable for 2026 includes speed improvements for 549 trains, offering enhanced travel experiences for passengers.

Looking forward, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor is under development, promising a journey of just under two hours compared to the current eight to nine hours by road. Scheduled to begin service in August 2027, this project will feature 12 stations and a notable undersea tunnel beneath Thane Creek, further emphasizing India’s commitment to modernizing its travel infrastructure.
