India is advocating for a more balanced and sustainable trade relationship with China, emphasizing the need to address structural trade imbalances and enhance market access. This call for improved economic ties was highlighted by Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal on Wednesday, amid a backdrop of recent diplomatic engagements between the two nations.
Both countries have recognized the importance of resolving key issues such as supply chain challenges and ensuring predictable market access, according to Agrawal. India is particularly keen on increasing its exports in sectors like agriculture, marine products, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and engineering goods. The country is also pushing for better access to Chinese markets for its goods and services.
Facilitating business travel and easing visa processes are crucial steps identified by Agrawal to boost interaction between Indian and Chinese business communities. The secretary’s comments come in the wake of discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, where both leaders underscored the importance of preventing bilateral differences from escalating into disputes.
As India seeks to strengthen its economic engagement with China, it aims to utilize established trade mechanisms to address ongoing economic concerns. The focus remains on creating more stable and predictable conditions for businesses operating in both countries, ensuring a mutually beneficial trade environment.
