Amid a row over Russian oil, sparked by claims from Donald Trump, Russia has issued a powerful reminder of its non-negotiable role in India’s security. Ambassador Denis Alipov called the 60-year defense cooperation the “backbone of India’s armed forces,” noting it accounts for 70% of its military equipment.
Alipov emphasized that this partnership is “unique” and “rooted in battlefield experience,” proven by “Operation Sindoor” and joint “Indra” exercises.
While India’s MEA refuted Trump’s oil claim by citing “national interest,” Alipov’s speech provided the strategic muscle. He announced a new defense push, expanding on JVs like BrahMos and Su-30 MKI.
The new offer includes co-production of the Su-57 fighter, drones, and advanced radar. The message is clear: while oil is “beneficial” trade, the defense relationship is the “backbone” of India’s security.
