Russia claims air defense success in intercepting all 91 drones allegedly launched at President Putin’s residence, but diplomatic damage has already been done to peace negotiations. US President Donald Trump expressed his anger after learning about the incident from Putin.
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that all unmanned aerial vehicles targeting Putin’s Novgorod region property were successfully intercepted and destroyed. Despite this defensive success, Moscow has warned that Russia will reconsider its negotiating position in response to what it characterizes as “state terrorism.”
Trump’s public comments emphasized his displeasure with what he viewed as an attack on a leader’s personal residence during peace negotiations. Speaking to reporters, he suggested that while Ukraine has military capabilities, targeting a world leader’s home undermines diplomatic efforts.
Ukrainian President Zelensky categorically rejected the allegations as fabricated propaganda. He accused Russia of creating a false narrative to justify planned strikes against Ukrainian government infrastructure and to derail the diplomatic progress achieved with Trump’s administration.
The controversy emerged just hours after what appeared to be productive discussions between Trump and Zelensky. The Kremlin’s subsequent announcement that Russia would reassess negotiations demonstrates that regardless of the interception success, diplomatic damage has occurred.
