Thailand Revokes 60-Day Visa-Free Access for Indian Tourists

Date:

Thailand is set to alter its visa regulations by discontinuing the temporary 60-day visa-free entry program, a change that will notably impact travelers from several countries, including India. This adjustment signifies a shift back to more stringent entry requirements and could influence how Indian tourists plan their visits to one of Asia’s top travel destinations. Under the new rules approved by Thai officials, Indian citizens will need either a Visa on Arrival (VoA) or an e-Visa before traveling to Thailand.

The Visa on Arrival option will now permit Indian tourists a maximum stay of 15 days per entry, considerably less than the previous 60-day period. For those seeking to sidestep potential delays at the airport, an online application through Thailand’s official e-Visa system is available. This policy shift might deter spontaneous travel and last-minute vacation bookings due to the additional paperwork, application process, and visa fees involved. Nevertheless, Thailand is expected to maintain its allure for Indian visitors due to its affordability, convenient flight routes, diverse attractions, and renowned hospitality industry.

These changes are anticipated to have a more pronounced effect on long-term visitors, digital nomads, and tourists planning extensive multi-city trips. Some travelers aiming for longer and more flexible stays might explore other Southeast Asian destinations with more accessible entry requirements. The updated visa rules are slated to come into effect 15 days following their publication in the Royal Gazette. Travelers entering Thailand before this implementation will still be subject to the previous rules, allowing them to stay until their initially granted period expires.

The temporary visa-free access was initially expanded in 2024 as part of Thailand’s efforts to rejuvenate its tourism industry and boost economic growth in the aftermath of the pandemic. This policy contributed to an increase in visitor numbers, reinforcing Thailand’s status as a favored spot for leisure travel, family holidays, and special events. Officials have attributed the decision to tighten entry requirements to concerns about visa overstays, unauthorized business activities, and a need for enhanced immigration oversight. The new framework aims to balance promoting tourism with effective border management and regulatory compliance.

Prospective travelers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the latest visa requirements and entry guidelines before booking their flights and accommodations to ensure a seamless travel experience. The changes highlight the necessity for visitors to plan ahead, ensuring compliance with the new visa regulations to enjoy a hassle-free trip to Thailand.
