SGS Unveils Guide for BIS Compliance to Aid Indian Market Entry

Date:

A new guide has been introduced to assist manufacturers and importers in adhering to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) compliance, crucial for entering India’s market. This development comes as the nation tightens its regulatory environment with expanding Quality Control Orders (QCOs). The guide provides detailed insights into the certification processes necessary for various product categories, aiming to streamline compliance and facilitate quicker market entry.

The guide highlights different certification pathways such as the ISI Mark under Scheme I for domestically manufactured products, which involves testing at BIS-approved labs and factory audits. For products under the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS), Scheme II is applicable. Foreign manufacturers, however, need to adhere to the Foreign Manufacturer Certification Scheme (FMCS), which mandates overseas factory audits and testing in India’s BIS-recognized laboratories.

Significant emphasis is placed on selecting the appropriate certification scheme, identifying relevant Indian Standards (IS), and preparing for necessary audits and testing procedures. The guide underscores that early planning is essential to mitigate certification delays, avoid the expense of re-testing, and expedite product launches. It also covers labeling and ongoing compliance requirements to ensure continuous market eligibility.

Additionally, the guide outlines the comprehensive BIS application management services that include certification planning, audit preparation, testing coordination, renewals, and surveillance support. These services are designed to support businesses in managing the complexities of compliance, with a network of laboratories across key industrial hubs in India aimed at streamlining testing and minimizing certification timelines.

As the scope of Quality Control Orders expands to new sectors like footwear, furniture, and medical devices, the guide advises businesses to evaluate BIS requirements early in the product development and import phases. This proactive approach is presented as essential for ensuring smooth market access and maintaining regulatory compliance in India’s evolving market landscape.
