Rebel MPs Join Shinde Camp, Delivering Blow to Shiv Sena (UBT)

Date:

In a significant development for Shiv Sena (UBT), two of its Lok Sabha members, Nagesh Patil Ashtikar and Omprakash Raje Nimbalkar, have announced their switch to the Eknath Shinde-led faction of the party. This move amplifies the internal strife within Uddhav Thackeray’s party, bringing the total number of MPs siding with the rebel group to six. Ashtikar cited insufficient development funds for his constituency and dissatisfaction with comments made against rebel MPs as reasons for his decision. He emphasized that while he remains committed to Shiv Sena’s ideology, he believes aligning with another faction will better serve his constituents’ interests.

Nimbalkar, confirming his defection, mentioned ongoing consultations with his supporters before deciding on his future political path. He refrained from criticizing Uddhav Thackeray or Aaditya Thackeray, despite the escalating tensions within the party. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut stated that some of the rebel MPs are still communicating with the party, expressing concerns about potential public backlash in their respective areas. Raut signaled that the party remains open to dialogue with those considering a return.

In response to the defections, the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction has initiated disciplinary actions against the six MPs, issuing show-cause notices and warning of potential consequences under the anti-defection law. Party leaders are contemplating appealing to the Lok Sabha Speaker for the disqualification of these MPs if they do not provide satisfactory responses to the notices.

The rift has intensified political tensions in Maharashtra, with both factions exchanging accusations. The BJP, however, has denied any involvement in encouraging the defections. As the situation unfolds, it highlights the growing challenges within Shiv Sena (UBT) as it navigates this period of political instability.
