The Kremlin poured cold water on President Trump’s summit plans Tuesday, stating there is “no precise timeframe” for a meeting with Vladimir Putin.
This was echoed by a US official, who, speaking anonymously, said there are “no plans” for a meeting in the “immediate future.”
This contradicts President Trump’s post from last week. After a call with Putin, Trump announced a Budapest summit “within two weeks.”
The president’s post did lead to a “productive” call on Monday between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
However, the US official clarified that no further in-person meeting between the diplomats was “necessary,” effectively pausing the summit.
