India Pursues Critical Minerals Deal as Modi Heads to Indonesia

Date:

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Indonesia next week for discussions with President Prabowo Subianto, with a significant emphasis expected to be on enhancing cooperation in the field of critical minerals. This meeting, as noted by Indian Ambassador Sandeep Chakravorty, aims to strengthen bilateral relations through several memorandums of understanding across various sectors including healthcare, pharmaceuticals, education, and space, in addition to critical minerals.

Both nations are keen on finalizing certain agreements during this visit, though some topics will continue to be under negotiation. A primary area of focus for India is to deepen collaboration with Indonesia to boost the processing and manufacturing of critical minerals. This partnership is envisioned to lead to the establishment of production facilities within Indonesia, ensuring a steady supply chain for Indian markets and facilitating global exports. This initiative also includes exploring joint ventures with local Indonesian partners.

Indonesia stands as the world’s leading producer of nickel, making it an attractive partner for nations aiming to secure a stable supply of critical minerals crucial for the production of electric vehicles, batteries, and other advanced technologies. The Indonesian government mandates that nickel must be processed domestically before it can be exported, which effectively encourages foreign investment into its downstream industries.

This visit by Prime Minister Modi underscores India’s broader strategy to fortify its critical mineral supply chains and diminish reliance on external sources. By expanding economic cooperation with Indonesia, India seeks not only to secure these vital resources but also to strengthen its industrial capabilities in line with global demands. The collaboration reflects a strategic move to harness Indonesia’s resources, thereby benefiting both countries’ economic landscapes.
