Ireland Targets Free Trade Deal with Strategic Partner India by Year-End

Date:

The European Union has emphasized India’s significance as a strategic partner, underscoring the deepening collaboration in areas such as trade, technology, security, and connectivity. This partnership is set to reach a new milestone with the anticipated signing of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the year’s end, marking a pivotal moment for both parties.

Addressing the commencement of Ireland’s presidency of the Council of the European Union, Irish Ambassador Kevin Kelly highlighted that the EU-India partnership transcends trade. It extends to critical domains including technology, research, climate action, maritime security, and efforts to establish resilient supply chains and enhance digital cooperation. These strengthened ties are aimed at tackling global challenges and fostering sustained economic growth.

The India-EU Free Trade Agreement, whose negotiations have recently concluded, is poised for formal signing by December, with implementation expected in early 2024. Amid evolving global economic and geopolitical landscapes, both India and the EU have broadened their cooperation in vital sectors such as defense, security, and emerging technologies.

EU Ambassador Herve Delphin noted the efforts by Europe and India to adapt to the dynamic global environment by seeking greater strategic autonomy while upholding robust partnerships. He emphasized the necessity of protecting freedom of navigation and ensuring secure global trade routes. Delphin called for enhanced India-EU cooperation in maritime security and regional stability to address these pressing concerns.
