From the UN to DC: Ukraine Follows Up on Trump Arms Agreement

Date:

From the diplomatic halls of the United Nations to the policy-making centers of Washington D.C., Ukraine is moving quickly to follow up on a new arms agreement reached between President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump. A Ukrainian delegation is now preparing to travel to the US capital to translate the high-level accord into a concrete military procurement plan.
The “broad contours” of the deal were agreed upon at the UN, Zelensky said. The next step is the “practical implementation,” which will be the focus of technical meetings in late September or early October. The centerpiece of the agreement is Ukraine’s pursuit of long-range weapons, a long-sought capability for Kyiv.
This new initiative will build upon an already historic $90 billion support package from the US. The acquisition of long-range missiles is seen by Ukrainian military planners as a critical tool to disrupt Russian logistics and command, potentially altering the course of the conflict.
The follow-up discussions in Washington will also include another key element from the UN meeting: a potential US purchase of Ukrainian drones. Zelensky confirmed that joint technical teams will work on this, signaling a new, more collaborative phase in the defense relationship between the two countries.
As the delegation prepares for its trip, Ukraine’s defenses have been bolstered by the recent arrival of a US-made Patriot air defense system from Israel, with two more on the way. This ensures that Ukraine’s security is being enhanced in the present as it lays the groundwork for its future military strength.
