DTC Bus Strike Drives Delhi Metro’s Record 82.4 Lakh Daily Riders

Date:

The Delhi Metro achieved a milestone on September 17, setting a record with 8,244,903 passenger boardings in a single day, as reported by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). This surge in ridership coincided with a strike by private agency drivers working with the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), which left thousands of buses out of service and increased pressure on other modes of public transport.

To accommodate the influx of commuters, the DMRC ramped up its services by adding 20 additional train trips and deploying eight extra trains, particularly targeting peak hours when passenger demand was highest. These measures helped manage the increased load on the metro network, ensuring a smoother transit experience amid the disruption to bus services.

The strike, which had entered its fourth day, highlighted the critical role of the Delhi Metro as a reliable alternative for daily commuters across Delhi-NCR. With buses largely unavailable, the metro system became a crucial lifeline for many residents needing to navigate the city efficiently.

Efforts to maintain security and manage the flow of passengers were also heightened, with the DMRC working closely with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to ensure the safety and orderly movement of the large number of commuters. This coordination was essential to handle the unprecedented passenger volume effectively.

The record-breaking footfall underscores the Delhi Metro’s capacity to adapt to unexpected challenges and its importance as a backbone of the city’s public transport infrastructure, especially in times of service disruptions elsewhere in the network.
