Delhi Bans Petrol Scooters, Rickshaws to Combat Air Pollution Surge

Date:

In a bid to combat air pollution, Delhi’s government has unveiled a strategy to gradually eliminate petrol-powered scooters, motorcycles, and autorickshaws. This initiative is part of a broader effort to curb emissions and enhance air quality in the Indian capital. The policy aims to have electric vehicles comprise at least 30% of the city’s fleet by the year 2030. Starting in 2027, new registrations will be available for electric three-wheelers and small commercial vehicles, with electric scooters and motorcycles following in 2028.

Transport emissions have been identified as a major contributor to Delhi’s pollution issues, particularly during winter months when smog intensifies. Vehicles are responsible for a significant portion of the city’s harmful pollutants. As such, the government’s electrification plan has been welcomed by environmentalists, who believe that transitioning to electric two- and three-wheelers could lead to a marked reduction in emissions and subsequent improvements in public health. The government also plans to establish more than 30,000 public charging points to facilitate this transition.

Despite the environmental benefits, the move has created some concerns among auto-rickshaw drivers. They have expressed worries about the time required for vehicle charging, the costs associated with purchasing and maintaining electric vehicles, and the potential financial impact during the transition period. Additionally, some experts have called for the government to place a greater emphasis on enhancing clean public transportation and improving connectivity for the final leg of commuters’ journeys.

To encourage the switch to electric vehicles, the policy includes incentives such as tax benefits for buyers. However, there are criticisms about the feasibility of the timeline, with some arguing that it might not be sufficient for drivers, manufacturers, and consumers to adjust to the changes. While the plan is ambitious, the rapid pace of implementation could pose challenges for various stakeholders involved in the transition to electric mobility.
