In response to growing concerns over student protests and allegations of police misconduct, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant has reaffirmed the Supreme Court’s dedication to upholding citizens’ rights and delivering justice through the appropriate legal channels. During a recent address, the CJI emphasized the court’s commitment to hearing every properly filed petition, reassuring citizens—particularly the youth—that the judiciary remains accessible and attentive to their grievances.
The CJI addressed misunderstandings surrounding the court’s involvement, clarifying that the Supreme Court had not previously refused to hear the matter due to the absence of a formal petition. He pointed out that only a representation had been submitted, which does not fulfill the legal criteria required to initiate judicial proceedings. This clarification comes amid widespread speculation and reports suggesting that the court declined to engage with the issue earlier.
Following the submission of new petitions formally filed in relation to alleged police excesses during the protests on July 20, the Supreme Court has agreed to schedule these cases for a hearing on Monday. This move underscores the court’s readiness to examine the claims and provide a platform for justice to be served where it is due.
Chief Justice Surya Kant also issued a caution against misleading reports that inaccurately portrayed the court’s actions, reminding the public and the media of the importance of accurate reporting in legal matters. His comments aim to dispel misconceptions and emphasize the judiciary’s transparent and fair approach to addressing such concerns.
