Starmer Calls for Focus as Burnham Dodges Leadership Question

Date:

Prime Minister Keir Starmer moved to shut down renewed speculation about a challenge from Andy Burnham, praising the Manchester mayor’s work and urging Labour MPs to avoid internal conflict.
Burnham reignited discussion about Labour’s leadership after declining to reject the possibility of standing against Starmer in the future. His remarks come at a moment when the party is struggling with polling and an upcoming budget.
Starmer, speaking en route to the G20 summit, highlighted Burnham’s role during the response to the Manchester synagogue attack. The prime minister noted that Burnham provided essential updates and acted swiftly on the ground.
Reports suggesting that Wes Streeting was plotting a coup further ignited tensions within the party. Starmer dismissed such speculation, insisting the government must prioritise the cost-of-living crisis.
While promoting his £1bn growth plan, Burnham repeated that he has launched no challenge. Nonetheless, his refusal to rule out future ambitions has left questions unanswered.
