Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the BRICS Summit Plenary session on “Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs, and Artificial Intelligence,” has put forth four key suggestions to deepen cooperation among BRICS nations in an increasingly multipolar world.
Boosting Credibility for Reformed Multilateralism
PM Modi stressed the importance of improving internal systems to enhance the credibility of BRICS when advocating for reformed multilateralism. He highlighted the need for demand-driven decision-making, long-term financial sustainability, and maintaining a healthy credit rating when sanctioning projects through the BRICS New Development Bank.
Collaborative Initiatives for the Global South
The Prime Minister suggested that BRICS nations work together to address the specific needs and aspirations of the Global South. He cited India’s BRICS Agricultural Research Platform as an example for sharing best practices in agri-biotech, precision farming, and climate change adaptation. He also proposed the creation of a BRICS Science and Research Repository to further benefit these nations.
Resilient Supply Chains for Critical Resources
Modi emphasized the necessity of securing and making supply chains resilient, especially for critical minerals and technology. He underlined that these resources should not be used by any single country solely for its own interests or as a weapon.
Responsible AI for All
Finally, PM Modi highlighted the importance of Responsible AI, stating India’s belief in artificial intelligence as a tool to enhance human values and capabilities, guided by the mantra of ‘AI for All’. He noted India’s active use of AI across various sectors and stressed that AI governance should prioritize both addressing concerns and encouraging innovation.
Modi concluded by emphasizing that BRICS nations must “Lead by Example” to fulfill the expectations of the Global South, reaffirming India’s commitment to working with all partners to achieve shared goals.
