Jaishankar Urges Global South Unity, Pushes for UN Reform at High-Level Meeting in New York

Date:

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has called for stronger solidarity among Global South nations and a collective drive to reform the United Nations and global governance structures. Speaking at a high-level meeting of Like-Minded Global South countries on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly in New York, he stressed the need for multilateralism to address today’s complex global challenges.
Jaishankar outlined five proposals to strengthen the Global South’s collective influence, urging nations to make better use of existing forums for consultations and cooperation. He highlighted the importance of bringing unique strengths to the international stage, citing innovations in vaccines, digital capabilities, education, agro-practices, and small and medium enterprises as contributions that can benefit developing nations.
On climate issues, Jaishankar insisted the Global South should take the lead in shaping initiatives around climate action and climate justice, ensuring their interests are prioritised instead of merely following Global North frameworks. He also called for proactive engagement on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, stressing the need to prevent developing countries from being left behind in the new digital era.
India, he noted, has consistently championed the voice of the Global South in international platforms, pushing for equitable participation of developing nations in shaping global decisions.
