A core trend of the 2025 box office has been the audience’s hunger for new ideas, but this trend is about to face a temporary supply shortage. The success of original films like Weapons, which earned a massive $148.8 million worldwide, has been the year’s defining narrative.
All year, moviegoers have voted with their wallets for fresh concepts. The astonishing $828 million take for Jurassic World Rebirth and the breakout success of Ryan Coogler’s Sinners confirmed that innovative storytelling is a major box office driver.
However, the pipeline of such wide-release, original films is slowing for the next several weeks. The fall slate is lighter and leans more on established franchises and smaller, independent-style films. While these movies will find their audiences, the market will lack the “event” feel that has been so prevalent.
The supply will be replenished in a big way starting in October with Tron: Ares. The holiday season will then deliver a mix of original concepts and major sequels, including Predator: Badlands and Zootopia 2, once again feeding the audience’s hunger for both the new and the familiar.
