India and Switzerland have signed five agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation in key areas including trade, technology, and mobility. The agreements were finalized during discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swiss President Guy Parmelin on Monday. Both leaders emphasized the importance of expanding bilateral cooperation in sectors such as defence, nuclear energy, and investment.
The agreements focus on migration and mobility, young professionals, transportation, research, innovation, and technology transfer. A notable aspect is the migration and mobility partnership, which seeks to strengthen cooperation while addressing irregular migration and human trafficking. This includes provisions for multiple-entry visas of up to five years and renewable permits for students. Additionally, an agreement facilitates the exchange of young professionals, allowing up to 300 individuals from each country annually to gain professional and language experience through temporary employment.
In the realm of trade, the two countries committed to improving market access for Indian exports and fostering greater investment. India aims for better access to Swiss markets to boost exports of agricultural products, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and engineering goods. Swiss companies, in turn, are encouraged to invest in Indian sectors such as biotechnology, life sciences, banking, insurance, food processing, and sustainability.
Further collaboration is set in the defence sector, with plans for increased military exchanges and defence production. The two countries also agreed to explore greater cooperation in nuclear energy. Joint research projects will be launched in areas including health, clean energy, and space, with a focus on promoting transportation technologies, sustainable infrastructure, electric vehicles, and mobility systems.
The agreements coincide with the first anniversary of the India-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, a pact aimed at boosting investment, trade, and employment between India and the four EFTA countries. The discussions also included global and regional issues, with both sides underscoring the need for dialogue and diplomatic efforts to support peace and stability in regions such as Ukraine and West Asia.
