Citing “egregious behavior,” president Trump has halted all trade negotiations with Ottawa. The move was a direct response to an ad from Ontario.
The ad used a 1987 clip of Ronald Reagan warning against tariffs to protest the 35% US levies on Canadian goods. Trump called the ad “fake” and “fraudulent.”
He accused Canada of attempting to meddle in US legal affairs. The tariffs have been a major source of friction, hitting Ontario’s economy particularly hard.
The ad has also been disavowed by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. They stated the “selective audio” “misrepresents” the full speech, where Reagan also justified his own tariffs on japan.
The suspension of talks, confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, jeopardizes the c$3.6 billion daily trade relationship between the two allies.
