Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “reviewing the situation” with Home Minister Amit Shah after a car explosion in Delhi killed eight people and injured 19. In a post on X, the Prime Minister offered condolences, saying, “May the injured recover at the earliest. Those affected are being assisted by authorities.”
The blast occurred on Monday evening near the iconic Red Fort. According to police, a car stopped at a red light outside the metro station suddenly exploded. The detonation was powerful, sparking a fire that destroyed more than a dozen other vehicles, including cars, rickshaws, and motorcycles.
Home Minister Amit Shah traveled to the site of the explosion. He stated that the cause is yet to be determined and will require forensic analysis of samples from the scene. Shah assured that “all angles” are being investigated, and it’s been reported that the registered owner of the car has been detained for questioning.
The scene of the blast was one of chaos and devastation. Witnesses described hearing a “very strong explosion” and seeing “body parts all over” the road. One resident, Om Prakash Gupta, recounted the horrific sight of a body on a car’s windscreen. Dozens of fire engines and ambulances were on site to manage the fire and transport the injured.
The incident has triggered a high alert in major cities like Mumbai and the neighboring state of Uttar Pradesh, as well as at large train stations. This is the deadliest blast in Delhi in over a decade.
