The West Bengal government has taken a significant step to preserve its cultural heritage by announcing a financial assistance package for Rath Yatra committees across the state. Each of the 60 committees will receive ₹5 lakh to aid in the restoration and maintenance of their historic chariots. This financial support marks the first instance of the state providing direct funding for these religious festivities, underscoring the importance of preserving these centuries-old wooden chariots.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari emphasized the urgent need for renovation of these traditional chariots, many of which have withstood the test of time. He encouraged the committees to allocate the funds specifically for repairs and preservation efforts to ensure their longevity. This initiative highlights the government’s commitment to protecting and celebrating the state’s rich cultural traditions.
In addition to the financial aid for the Rath Yatra, the government has also planned a symbolic gesture for devotees participating in the 30-km Shravan Yatra at Tarakeshwar in the Hooghly district. Helicopters will be used to shower flower petals on the participants, adding a festive touch to the pilgrimage. Moreover, to ensure the safety and comfort of the pilgrims, Seva Kendras will be set up at 75 fair locations. These centers will provide essential services, including medical aid, police assistance, and access to drinking water.
Looking to the future, the state government intends to extend its financial support to even more Rath Yatra committees. This plan is part of a broader investment strategy, which includes a ₹1,000 crore commitment over the next three years to develop the Bengal Shaktipeeth Circuit. This initiative aims to enhance religious tourism by restoring historic temples and promoting pilgrimage activities, further boosting the state’s cultural and religious heritage.
