A new scientific review indicates that consuming up to five cups of black coffee daily is safe for most adults and could potentially reduce the risk of several cardiovascular diseases. Researchers have observed that moderate coffee consumption is linked with benefits such as a decreased likelihood of experiencing stroke, heart failure, and Type 2 diabetes.
The study, published in a prominent medical journal, suggests that healthy adults can consume up to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day—approximately the equivalent of five small cups of black coffee—without increasing their risk of developing heart disease. Experts highlight that moderate coffee intake, specifically between two and four cups a day, may enhance cardiovascular health. Regular consumption of black coffee, devoid of added sugars, creams, or flavored syrups, has been associated with a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, heart failure, and certain types of irregular heart rhythms.
However, researchers warn that excessive caffeine intake might have adverse effects for some individuals. While caffeine could potentially lower the risk of certain heart rhythm disorders, it might also provoke irregular heartbeats in those who are sensitive. The review notes that coffee contains various natural compounds in addition to caffeine, complicating the determination of whether the health benefits are due solely to caffeine. Scientists also emphasize that these findings are based on observational studies, which show associations rather than direct cause-and-effect relationships.
Not every caffeinated beverage provides the same outcomes as coffee. Energy drinks and concentrated energy shots typically contain much higher caffeine levels than brewed coffee and have been associated with increased blood pressure and abnormal heart rhythms. Health experts underline that individual responses to caffeine can vary based on factors such as age, genetics, medications, and overall health. Some individuals might experience side effects like anxiety, sleep disturbances, or heart palpitations even at moderate consumption levels.
Researchers advise that individuals pay close attention to how their bodies react to caffeine and suggest consulting a healthcare professional for those with concerns about their caffeine intake.
