India clinched the Asian Games men’s cricket gold medal with a 19-run victory over Pakistan in a gripping final at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan. The win marked India’s successful defense of their title, further extending their T20 international dominance over their arch-rivals.
India’s innings began with a powerful start, courtesy of Abhishek Sharma, who blasted a rapid half-century. His efforts propelled India to 81/2 in the Powerplay, marking their highest Powerplay score against Pakistan in T20Is. Despite a mid-innings slowdown due to effective bowling by Pakistan’s Arafat Minhas, Ahmed Daniyal, and Abrar Ahmed, India regained momentum with a late surge.
Tilak Varma played a pivotal role in India’s late innings assault, remaining unbeaten on 51 off just 22 balls. His 62-run partnership with Shivam Dube, who added 27 runs, pushed India past the 200-run threshold, setting a formidable target of 212 for Pakistan.
In response, Pakistan mounted a strong chase, led by Hasan Nawaz’s aggressive 96 not out from 51 deliveries. Nawaz, alongside Saim Ayub, who contributed to an 87-run partnership, placed India under significant pressure during the chase.
However, India’s bowlers regained control at crucial moments. Washington Sundar delivered an impactful 18th over, disrupting Pakistan’s momentum, while Jasprit Bumrah tightened the game further in the penultimate over. Ultimately, Pakistan required 33 runs from the final over, but Shivam Dube managed to defend it successfully, sealing India’s 19-run victory.
This triumph secured another Asian Games gold for the Indian men’s cricket team, highlighting their continued excellence in the T20 format against Pakistan.
