India has aligned with the European Union, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Barbados, and Kenya to form the “Partners for Multilateralism” (P4M), a new initiative aimed at enhancing global cooperation. The platform was introduced during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, focusing on addressing pressing global challenges through multilateral efforts.
Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the significance of this initiative in the current geopolitical climate, which he described as fraught with tensions and conflicts. He advocated for more inclusive and transparent decision-making processes within international organizations to effectively tackle these challenges.
The P4M platform will prioritize areas requiring urgent international collaboration, including international security, climate change, and emerging technologies. Additional focus areas include development finance, pandemic preparedness, resilient supply chains, and counterterrorism, highlighting the need for comprehensive strategies to address these global issues.
As part of their commitment, the member countries have called for reforming the multilateral system to ensure it is more effective, representative, and inclusive. The P4M declaration also underscored the importance of cooperation in sustainable development, fair trade, global finance, artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and global health.
To facilitate these efforts, the participating nations have agreed to set up a coordination mechanism and pinpoint priority areas for joint action. The platform remains open to other countries interested in promoting multilateral cooperation, aiming to build a more cohesive international community.
