Delhi’s air pollution has worsened sharply, prompting health experts to declare the situation a “public health emergency.” Surveys indicate that nearly 80% of households across Delhi-NCR have had at least one family member fall ill in the past month due to hazardous air. Doctors warn that masks and air purifiers offer only limited protection, stressing the need for long-term policy reforms.
Delhi recorded a 24-hour average AQI of 370 on Friday morning, marking the eighth straight day of “very poor” air quality. Recent readings show a steady rise, with AQI levels at 392 on Wednesday, 374 on Tuesday, and 351 on Monday. Over 18 pollution-monitoring stations registered “severe” air quality above 400, including areas such as Chandni Chowk, Anand Vihar, Mundka, Bawana, Narela, DTU, and Wazirpur.
Experts caution that prolonged exposure to such pollution levels can significantly reduce life expectancy and increase respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses. They urge immediate and sustained action to prevent further deterioration of public health in the National Capital Region.
