Will Space AI Be ‘Like Bugs on a Windshield’ for Science?

Date:

Google’s “Project Suncatcher” may solve a major problem for the AI industry, but it could create an existential one for astronomy. The plan for “compact constellations of about 80” satellites has astronomers worried, as they already object that the “rising numbers of satellites” are “like bugs on a windshield.”
This colorful description, cited in the report, refers to the bright streaks that satellites create on long-exposure images. These streaks ruin data and obscure the faint light from distant stars and galaxies, effectively blinding scientists on the ground.
This creates a clash of two high-tech fields. Google is pushing to move its AI datacenters to orbit to tap into clean solar power and avoid land/water use. But in doing so, it risks “polluting” the orbital environment, which is a critical laboratory for astronomers.
This is not the only environmental concern. Each launch, needed to deploy the 80-satellite constellations, “emits hundreds of tonnes of CO2.” This means the project is “dirty” to launch, and “dirty” for science once in orbit, all in the name of “clean” operational energy.
As Google and competitors like Elon Musk push forward, the conflict between technological progress and scientific observation is set to intensify. The 2027 prototypes will not just be technical tests, but the first flashpoints in a new battle for the future of the night sky.
