Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is insisting on a veto over the Gaza peace force as the Trump-brokered truce falters on two fronts: military violations and a stalled hostage exchange.
On the diplomatic front, Netanyahu declared, “Israel will determine which forces are unacceptable to us,” a move he says the US supports and which he has used to signal a block on Turkey.
On the military front, an Israeli strike on Nuseirat camp was branded a “clear violation” by Hamas. Israel claimed it targeted Islamic Jihad militants.
On the humanitarian front, the exchange of remains is slow. Trump has warned Hamas to “return more bodies now,” as only 18 hostage remains have been returned for 195 Palestinian bodies.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in Israel, backed Netanyahu’s stance on the peace force, stating it must be “comfortable” for Israel and must exclude Hamas.
