BCCI Advises Rohit Sharma to Focus on Fitness as Review Looms for ODI Futures

Date:

As India begins its ODI series against South Africa, a more defining moment awaits Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli once the matches conclude. The BCCI is planning a closed-door review in Ahmedabad to assess the long-term roles of both senior players in 50-over cricket, with the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind.
According to reports, board officials, head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar will meet to outline a clear roadmap for the two veterans. A BCCI source said it is essential for players of Rohit and Kohli’s stature to receive clarity rather than continue “playing with uncertainty.” Rohit has been advised to concentrate on fitness and performance while avoiding public reactions to speculation surrounding his future.
Concerns have emerged over both players’ rhythm, as they now participate in ODIs after long breaks. While they scored in the final ODI against Australia, insiders noted they appeared rusty in the earlier matches — a pattern the board wants to avoid. Rohit’s batting approach is also under review, with expectations that he returns to his aggressive, early-attacking style.
Despite these concerns, both Rohit and Kohli remain central to India’s ODI batting structure. The board expects them to lead the top order and guide younger players, not simply secure their own positions. Increasing their game time outside internationals is also under consideration, with possible participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy before upcoming limited-overs assignments.
While the South Africa series is the immediate focus, the crucial discussion about the future of India’s two modern greats will take place afterward.
