WhatsApp is introducing a significant update to enhance user privacy by allowing connections via usernames instead of phone numbers. This new feature, which is being gradually implemented, will enable users to initiate chats using a username, a change expected to be globally available later this year. Users can already start reserving unique usernames as part of the phased rollout.
The new system lets users create a distinct handle within the app. To start a conversation, someone only needs to know the username, ensuring that phone numbers remain concealed. If a chosen username is unavailable, WhatsApp will provide alternative suggestions through an integrated generator. Importantly, there will be no public directory of usernames, which means only individuals who know a specific username can make contact, enhancing privacy.
To reserve a username, users are advised to update their app and navigate to Settings → Account → Username. Given WhatsApp’s vast user base, early reservations are being encouraged to secure preferred usernames, as competition is expected to be high. Notifications will inform users when this feature becomes accessible in their region.
An additional layer of security is offered through an optional “username key,” which users can distribute separately to control who can initiate contact. This feature is designed to benefit not only individual users but also creators, businesses, and public accounts. It provides an opportunity for users to harmonize their WhatsApp identity with their existing profiles on other platforms like Instagram and Facebook.
WhatsApp underscores that adopting a username is optional. Those who prefer to continue using their phone numbers for communication can do so without any changes. As the feature gradually becomes available, users will receive in-app notifications to guide them through the process.
