India is preparing to host this year’s BRICS summit in September, during which Russian President Vladimir Putin will be participating. Scheduled for September 12-13 in New Delhi, the summit will see Putin join leaders from the member nations. This event marks a significant gathering for the BRICS bloc, as it continues to expand its influence on the global stage.
According to a Kremlin aide, President Putin’s agenda includes a planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, which will take place on the sidelines of the summit. This bilateral discussion highlights the ongoing diplomatic engagements between Russia and China, both key players within the BRICS framework.
President Putin’s upcoming visit to India follows his last trip in December 2025, when he attended the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit. His participation in the BRICS summit underscores the importance of maintaining strong ties with fellow member countries, as the group addresses global economic and political challenges.
Earlier this month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited New Delhi for a two-day conclave with other BRICS members, laying the groundwork for the upcoming summit. The BRICS bloc, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has grown in recent years. In 2024, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates joined, and Indonesia became part of the group in 2025.
With 11 emerging economies now in its fold, BRICS represents a significant portion of the world’s population, GDP, and trade. The group’s expansion reflects its growing role as a global platform, bringing together nations that collectively account for nearly 49.5% of the world’s population, around 40% of global GDP, and approximately 26% of global trade.
