Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Indonesia, a move anticipated to strengthen India’s strategic, economic, and maritime ties with a key partner in the Indo-Pacific region. This visit aims to expand cooperation in crucial sectors such as trade, technology, digital governance, healthcare, defence, and maritime security. The backdrop to this visit is Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s earlier trip to India in January 2025, during which the countries celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations and inked agreements on health, digital collaboration, maritime security, and cultural exchanges.
India and Indonesia, both major democracies in the Indo-Pacific and members of the G20, maintain a bilateral trade volume of approximately $30 billion. However, both nations are eager to explore and unlock further economic potential. India is particularly focused on boosting its investment in Indonesia, targeting critical sectors such as minerals, manufacturing, renewable energy, and food security. The burgeoning digital sector stands out as a focal point for collaboration, with Indonesia showing interest in India’s Digital Public Infrastructure and its digital commerce advances.
Collaborative efforts in digital technology are poised to be a highlight, as both countries look into partnerships in artificial intelligence, fintech, cybersecurity, and digital payments. Support for small businesses also features prominently on the agenda. On the maritime front, security will be a priority, with both nations planning to enhance their cooperation in the strategically vital Strait of Malacca. The visit aims to bolster naval collaboration, improve maritime domain awareness, and expand defence-industrial ties. Indonesia’s initiative to diversify its defence suppliers may offer new opportunities for India’s defence sector.
Beyond economic and security matters, the visit is also expected to foster deeper people-to-people connections. Stronger academic, business, and cultural partnerships are anticipated, contributing to a more comprehensive and enduring relationship between India and Indonesia. As both countries look to the future, these enhanced ties across multiple domains underscore their shared commitment to building a robust partnership in the Indo-Pacific.
