India and Denmark are set to enhance their strategic partnership, emphasizing cooperation in renewable energy, sustainable shipping, technological innovation, and bilateral trade. This development was underscored during Denmark’s Business Minister Martin Lidegaard’s visit to Mumbai and New Delhi from November 2-3, where he engaged with Indian government representatives and business leaders to explore economic cooperation opportunities.
The discussions aim to advance the Green Strategic Partnership, established in 2020, by crafting a new joint action plan focusing on mutual economic and environmental interests. Lidegaard’s visit to Mumbai included a tour of facilities operated by APM Terminals, part of the Danish shipping group Maersk, and meetings with Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma to discuss business and investment opportunities.
In New Delhi, Lidegaard’s talks with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal centered on expanding bilateral trade and strengthening economic ties, particularly concerning the proposed India-European Union free trade agreement. Currently, over 200 Danish companies operate in India, employing more than 100,000 people across various sectors.
Sustainable maritime development was another focal area, with discussions between Lidegaard and Union Ports and Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal addressing environmentally friendly shipping, modern port infrastructure, and the development of green maritime corridors. Cooperation in renewable energy was highlighted through talks with Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi, focusing on enhancing energy efficiency and supporting India’s transition to a sustainable power system.
Denmark’s involvement in solar energy development, through contributions to the International Solar Alliance, further supports the broader cooperation in renewable energy. The strengthened partnership between India and Denmark is anticipated to generate new opportunities for investment, technological exchange, and sustainable development while deepening economic relations between the two nations.
