India is progressing with its strategy to procure five more S-400 Triumf air defense systems from Russia, as Moscow has put forward a cost proposal to initiate discussions with New Delhi. The ultimate decision is anticipated to be made by the Cabinet Committee on Security, subsequent to price negotiations and clearance from the Finance Ministry. India’s current agreement for five S-400 systems, established in 2018 at a cost of $5.43 billion, is slated for completion with the last system’s delivery by November 2026.
The acquisition of these additional systems is intended to bolster India’s air defense, particularly in the eastern sector bordering China. The S-400 systems have demonstrated their effectiveness in India’s air defense strategy, notably during Operation Sindoor in May 2025. The reported success of these operations has reinforced the argument for expanding India’s S-400 inventory.
In parallel, India has shown interest in Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft, although no decision has been made. This interest comes amid China’s deployment of J-20 stealth fighters in Tibet, prompting the Indian Air Force to consider the Russian offer seriously.
The proposed S-400 deal is expected to play a significant role in broader India-Russia defense discussions. These discussions are particularly pertinent as Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to visit India for the BRICS summit in September, further highlighting the importance of defense collaboration between the two nations.
