27 Nations Convene: EU Warns Trump’s Tariff Threat Might Cause Collective Action

Date:

As 27 nations convene, the EU warns Trump’s tariff threat might cause powerful collective action. The dispute over Greenland has escalated sharply, prompting a severe reaction from Brussels. European leaders have pushed back against President Trump’s ultimatum, scheduling an emergency meeting of envoys for Sunday to manage the crisis.
Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa issued a joint statement emphasizing the gravity of the situation. They warned that imposing tariffs on European allies is a dangerous move that threatens the fabric of the transatlantic partnership. The leaders vowed that the EU would remain united and coordinated.
The tariff plan targets specific European economies with increasing penalties. Starting February 1, a 10% tariff is set to hit goods from Denmark, France, Germany, and the UK. Trump has threatened to raise this to 25% on June 1 if the US does not acquire Greenland, effectively holding trade relations hostage.
The EU also clarified the context of military exercises in the Arctic, which had become a point of contention. Leaders stated that the Danish drills were pre-coordinated responses to security needs and pose no threat to anyone. They highlighted that a secure Arctic is in the best interest of both Europe and the United States.
Affirming their support for Denmark, EU leaders noted that dialogue between the US and the Kingdom of Denmark started last week. However, they stressed that the bloc must remain vigilant and united. The upcoming emergency meeting will determine the collective steps the EU will take.
